Tips from a Registered Dietitian New Year, Healthier You- How Primary Care and Nutrition Work Together

By Melissa Schuster MS RDN CDN IFNCP, owner of Schuster Nutrition, PLLC

January is the perfect time to reassess your health goals, and as a registered dietitian, I’m here to remind you that food plays a huge role in how you feel every day. I work closely with Dr. Sindwani to help you connect the dots between your health and your plate.

How Your Doctor Sets the Stage

Dr. Sindwani sees the big picture—whether it’s managing high blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, chronic disease, or preventative care. She helps identify areas where lifestyle changes, especially nutrition, can make a difference. But knowing what to eat and actually making those changes are two very different things. That’s where a registered dietitian (like me!) comes in.

My Role as Your Dietitian

My job is to translate those medical goals into practical, personalized steps you can stick with. Here’s how I help:

  • Small, realistic changes: Together, we’ll focus on one or two specific tweaks—maybe it’s adding a vegetable to lunch, increasing your protein with breakfast, or cutting back on sugary drinks.
  • Personalized advice: Your health isn’t one-size-fits-all. I consider your preferences, schedule, lifestyle and goals to create a plan that works for you.
  • Accountability: Change takes time. After our initial consultation, we can continue working together in a concierge nutrition program to help you stay on track and adjust your plan as needed.

Simple Steps to Start the Year

If you’re ready to take charge of your health this year, here’s where to begin:

  1. Book your annual check-up: Dr. Sindwani can help you understand your health priorities. As part of your annual membership, you receive a free consult with a registered dietitian to learn more about specific nutrition recommendations.
  2. Pick one nutrition goal: Instead of overhauling everything, start small. What’s one change you can make this week?
  3. Eat more whole foods: Think simple—fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins.

Let’s Work Together

Your health is a team effort. By combining Dr. Sindwani’s medical expertise with my practical nutrition guidance, we can create a plan that’s realistic and effective. Here’s to a healthier year, one step at a time.
